Smart pills that monitor your body from the inside

Microchips are getting so small they can be ingested and send feedback about your own body.

UK’s Lloyd Pharmacy and Silicon Valley’s Proteus Biomedical have teamed up and will be bringing ingestible, intelligent pills with embedded microchips to the market by the end of this year.

The smart pills contain a small amount of copper and magnesium that is activated by stomach acid. The digital signals are captured by an adhesive patch on the host body and can monitor vital signs such as heart rate, respiration, temperature, body posture, and sleeping pattern.

The partnership between Lloyd Pharmacy and Proteus Biomedical seems to indicate that the monitoring system will be used to determine how a person react to certain medication so that doctors can adjust dosage accordingly.

But it might not be long before it becomes a fashionable trend where sports superstars will be using these sensors to push their bodies to the maximum limit.
